Got Milk?

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

The funniest thing happened to me last week when Benjamin, Greg, my mother-in-law Patricia, and I were at the Philadelphia International Airport preparing to fly to Mexico.  So, you know they have this new security thing where you can’t bring liquids on the plane (which is such a pain, because I have a strong affinity for water…nursing mommies, do you know what I mean?) and they have a checkpoint set up to check your carry-on luggage for liquids right before you go through the security screening (great, another checkpoint, thank goodness for my sling!).

We stopped at the checkpoint table and the security lady asked me if I had any liquids.  I told her about the 2 containers of baby food that were in my carry-on bag.  She said to me “That’s IT?!” with a surprised look on her face.  (more…)

What’s in a Name?

So, we finally get to Mexico and of course, we had to fill out the obligatory immigration forms.  Now, I take these things seriously, because I am always so scared that they may not let me come back to the US if I fill it out incorrectly.  I started filling out the form, ho hum, and I get to the part that says Occupation.  I stopped for a minute and said to myself, “what in the world do I put here?”  Then, I said, “well, what IS my occupation?  Hmmm…”  (more…)

Expectant Daddy

Friday, October 6th, 2006

The other night my husband sat beside me on the couch waiting to feel our daughter kick from inside my belly. Suddenly he looked up at my face.

“Someday she’s going to call me daddy,” he said, clearly startled by this realization.

It’s been amazing to watch him transform over the past few months. Ever since I first told him I was pregnant again he’s been happy about the news. He’s taken such good care of me–making me whatever I thought I could stomach when I was battling with morning sickness, taking over most of the housework (well, he did a fair amount of that already), keeping after me to drink plenty of water. I think all of his focus was on me until a few weeks ago.

Then we had the “big” ultrasound. (more…)

A Case of Imperfection

Thursday, October 5th, 2006

Much like our wedding day, do we broach the pending arrival of our child; the image of perfection of the day firmly entrenched in our mind, and woe be the one who attempts to be the voice of reason.  I, naively, imagined myself looking radiant in the receiving outfit someone had been cruel enough to buy me at my shower, calmly handling my child, guest, and receding hormones.  In reality, I wore nothing but sweats I wouldn’t feel guilty about throwing away after my hospital stay, and a nursing bra that could accommodate my bust which went from preteen to porn star within the duration of two days, and suffered from such a case of the shakes, that one had to wonder if I was in withdrawal from a controlled substance.  What to Expect the First Year mentioned nothing of this; and well, everyone else had left me blissfully ignorant. The Birth of the “Out of Control Freak”

Monday, October 2nd, 2006

Wow, Benjamin’s 1st birthday is here!  Can you believe it?  I can’t believe that one whole year has gone by since September 22, 2005 when our little Benjamin made his grand entrance into the world.  What a wonderful (read: crazy) year it has been!

Of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t go through the obligatory “I remember Benjamin’s Birth Day just like it was yesterday and here is how it happened” story.  You know what I mean…so here I go…
